Dim sum will always be one of my favorite meals! I knew I just had to crochet something to remind me of all the delicious, fun times I've had with family and friends at dim sum. I keep these little guys on my car dashboard, and they bring a smile to my face everywhere I go. The best part? Each pattern only takes about 30 minutes to complete!

Materials:

Medium (#4) yarn in yellow, tan & white

I'm a big believer in the versatility of yarn; as long as you can achieve or adjust the gauge and the quality, drape, etc. of the fabric is to your liking, feel free to substitute with any yarn you like! For amigurumi, acrylic is typically the most affordable option. Personally, I used Big Twist yarn from JOANN for all three of these.

Sizes D (3.25mm) & E (3.5mm) hooks

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch markers

Safety eyes, 6mm & 8mm

Poly-fil stuffing

Stitches & Abbreviations:

sc = single crochet

MC = magic circle

inc = increase

sl st = slip stitch

FLO = front loop only

BLO = back loop only

Notes:

-This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

-"3 sc" means 1 sc in the next 3 stitches.

-Sl sts to connect to crust (egg tart pattern) do not count as a stitch.

Pattern 1 (烧卖, Siu Mai)

Wrapper:

Using size D hook and yellow yarn,

R1: 6 sc in MC (6)

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, 1 inc)*6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, 1 inc)*6 (24)

R5: (3 sc, 1 inc)*6 (30)

R6-10: 30 sc (30)

Fasten off with invisible technique, leaving a very long tail. Run tail through every other st between R9-10, then pull edges gently to create that slightly wrinkled look for the siu mai skin. Tie a knot to secure.

Filling:

Using size D hook and tan yarn,

R1: 6 sc in MC (6)

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, 1 inc)*6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, 1 inc)*6 (24)

Fasten off with invisible technique.

Place 6mm safety eyes and sew facial expressions onto the filling, and add Poly-fil stuffing to the wrapper. Using the tail from the wrapper, sew the wrapper to the filling, going between R9-10 of the wrapper.

Weave in all ends, and you're done!

Pattern 2 (包子, Bao Zi)

Using size E hook and white yarn,

R1: 8 sc in MC (8)

R2: 8 inc (16)

R3: (1 sc, 1 inc)*8 (24)

R4: (2 sc, 1 inc)*8 (32)

R5-11: 32 sc (32)

Fasten off with invisible technique, leaving a long tail.

Place 8mm safety eyes between R6-7 with 3 sts between, sew facial expressions, and add Poly-fil stuffing.

Run the yarn tail through every other st between R10-11, creating 8 pleats, and scrunch. Then, thread the tail through FLO of each pleat and pull closed.

Weave in all ends, and you're done!

Pattern 3 (蛋挞, Egg Tart)

Crust:

Using size D hook and tan yarn,

R1: 6 sc in MC (6)

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, 1 inc)*6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, 1 inc)*6 (24)

R5: (3 sc, 1 inc)*6 (30)

End rounds. Start working in rows to create ribbed effect.

R1: Ch 6, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, 1 sl st FLO in next st of R5 (5)

R2: 1 sl st FLO in next st of R5, turn, 5 sc BLO (5)

R3: Ch 1, turn, 5 sc BLO, 1 sl st FLO in next st of R5 (5)

R4: Repeat R2 (5)

R5: Ch 1, turn, 5 sc BLO, do NOT sl st (5)

R6: 1 sl st FLO in next st of R5, turn, 5 sc BLO (5)

R7: Ch 1, turn, 5 sc BLO, 1 sl st FLO in next st of R5 (5)

R8-13: Repeat R2-7 (5)

R14-19: Repeat R2-7 (5)

R20-25: Repeat R2-7 (5)

R26-31: Repeat R2-7 (5)

R32-36: Repeat R2-6 (5)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to filling.

Filling:

R1: 6 sc in MC (6)

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, 1 inc)*6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, 1 inc)*6 (24)

R5: (3 sc, 1 inc)*6 (30)

R6: (4 sc, 1 inc)*6 (36)

Fasten off with invisible technique.

Place 6mm safety eyes and sew facial expressions onto the filling. Using the tail from the crust, sew the crust to the filling, going between the first & second sts of each row of the crust. Then, sew the two sides of the filling together.

Weave in all ends, and you're done!
