With very easy construction and no seaming, this free convertible mitten pattern is as easy as they come. Finally, the best of both worlds--you can keep your hands warm while still having your fingers free!

Materials:

Bulky (#5) yarn: approx. 90/110/130 yd

I'm a big believer in the versatility of yarn; as long as you can achieve or adjust the gauge and the quality, drape, etc. of the fabric is to your liking, feel free to substitute with any yarn you like! Personally, I used K+C Luxe Craft Angel Hair Yarn.

Sizes I (5.5mm) & J (6mm) hooks, or hooks needed to obtain gauge

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch markers

Optional: 2 buttons

Measurements:

Child: 5″ wide at widest point (including thumb) x 9.5″ long

Adult Woman: 5.5" wide at widest point (including thumb) x 10.5" long

Adult Man: 6" wide at widest point (including thumb) x 11.5" long

Gauge:

4" square = 24 stitches x 10 rows in hdc

Stitches & Abbreviations:

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

BLO = back loop only

hdc = half double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

inc = increase

hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together

Notes:

-This pattern is written in US crochet terms.

-Turning ch 1 at beginning of round and sl st to join at end of round do not count as a stitch.

-Sl st to join should always be done in first st of round.

-"10 hdc" means 1 hdc in the next 10 stitches.

-This pattern is written in sizes Child/Adult W/Adult M (e.g.: "5/7/9 hdc" means 5 hdc for Child, 7 hdc for Adult Woman, and 9 hdc for Adult Man). If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes.

-Model's hands are 3.75" wide at widest point (including thumb) and 6" long; model wears mittens in size Child.

Weave in all ends, and you're done!

Button Closure (optional):

Use thread or yarn to sew one button to the center back (not the palm side) of each mitten where the cuff & body connect.

Cut 3 strands of yarn about 12" long. Loosely knot the strands together, then braid them into a tight 3-strand braid. The braid needs to be long enough for the button to pass through. With the knot on the inside of the mitten, pull the braid in-to-out of the last row of the mitten cover, then back out-to-in. Knot the other end of the braid on the inside. Weave in both knotted ends securely, and check to make sure the loop is secure. Do the same for the other mitten.
